Excerpt from Chapter 7: Publishing Books
The pinnacle of the expert’s edge is reached when a thoughtleader writes and publishes books. Though such an endeavor can appear overwhelming to many would-be thoughtleaders, there’s no denying a book’s many impacts. When you write a book, all the pieces fall into place. You need a ton of research and experience to write a book, which paves the way for finding enough insights and lessons learned to fill your book’s pages.
While the same can also be said about writing articles (and in fact, if the prospect of a book looms as too formidable for you, starting instead with writing an article might be your best tack), books allow thoughtleaders to really strut their stuff, delving deep into their thoughtleading knowledge and covering the whole map of their expertise.
A second impact is a book’s positive effect on winning speaking engagements, especially at high-level conferences, company retreats, and other major professional events. Authors of books tend to be at the top of the list of desirable speakers for planners of such events, which in turn sometimes attract business and mainstream media. Reporters from both print and online publications who wish to keep their eyes and ears open for new article ideas may end up approaching a speaker, and even bloggers who are eager to identify new concepts to write about will be eager to publicize the expert behind the lectern as well. So by writing and publishing a book, you end up traversing all five thoughtleading pillars at once: publishing, speaking, research, media, and the Internet.
Does this mean that you should just sit down and start writing, stopping only after you've filled a few hundred Word document pages? Not quite. There’s a lot to consider once you've made the decision to write and publish a book, so hold onto your quill pen. Let’s start at the beginning with the most important initial question: will your book idea advance your business goals?...
